A Masters graduate in Traditional Dance Performance at the Irish World Academy, winner of the coveted Corn TG4 at Oireachtas na Gaeilge, choreographer and performer Liam Ó Scanláin’s art is firmly rooted in a sean nós and percussive dance tradition.

Liam is a Dance Ireland Associate Artist, an Arts Council Next Generation recipient, and has received the honour of being invited to perform for President Michael D. Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin.

Having performed with numerous Irish music and dance acts across Europe, Canada, Russia, Japan and New Zealand, Liam was part of the Irish-Québécois collaboration, Sokalo Remix, with Montréal based Zeugma Danse between 2015 and 2017. In 2018, Liam choreographed for Preab Meadar, aconcert of sean nós song, music and dance, based on the irregular time signatures of the medieval Dán Díreach.

Described as “disarmingly simple, authentic, captivating and joyous” (No More Workhorse), Liam’s first solo choreography, Nascanna, premiered as part of ‘First Looks’at Dublin Dance Festival before performing at Leitrim Dance Week,Laois Dance Platform, ‘Tanzmesse’ Dusseldorf, ‘What’s Next? Festival’ – Limerick, ‘Echo Echo Festival’Derry, and as part of ‘New Ireland Dance – Choreographies of Nowness’at 92Y in New York and Project Arts Centre Dublin.

Through his role at the Leitrim Dance Projectand as a regular tutor at the Irish World Academy, Liam is keen to see the nurturing and development of a living traditional dance community. Liam is regularly sought after to facilitate workshops and has taught extensively at festivals across both at home in Ireland and internationally. In 2018, in association with fellow dancer Martin Hughes, Liam founded B.E.O. Dance to promote a revival in awareness, participation and enjoyment of traditional dance amongst children, teenagers and adults.
